ROSS POPE – FALMOUTH TOWN LEGEND
Ross Pope is the next name to take his rightful place on Falmouth Town’s Wall of Legends.
Joining from Troon after a stint with Town’s reserves, Ross made his first-team debut on March 4th, 2001 in a 1-1 draw away at Torpoint. Over two separate spells with the club, Popey established himself as one of the all-time greats in Town history, amassing an incredible 393 appearances and scoring 14 goals – placing him 6th on the all-time appearances list.
After his first five seasons with Falmouth, Ross followed manager Steve Massey to Truro City, where he achieved the ultimate dream of winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 2007. His love for Town, however, brought him back in 2010, and he served the club with distinction until his retirement in 2017.
From a player’s perspective, Ross was the epitome of reliability and professionalism. A top-class central defensive midfielder, he was the player you wanted alongside you in the trenches – disciplined, hard working, and with an engine that never quit. Though not the most vocal, Ross led by example on and off the pitch, earning universal respect from teammates and opponents alike.
As a manager, I had the privilege of working with Ross during my first two seasons. His wealth of experience, calm demeanour, and professionalism were invaluable to the group. His presence helped shape the team during those formative years, and his influence extended far beyond the pitch.
To this day, I’ve never heard a bad word spoken about Popey – a testament to his character and impact on the game. While we don’t see him as often as we’d like, he’s still a regular supporter and a proud member of the Falmouth Town family.
Thank you, Popey, for your loyalty, dedication, and contribution to Falmouth Town. You’re a legend in every sense of the word.
